I'm a 24-year-old trying to lose 20 pounds with the Johnson's up day/down day diet. I'm kind of scared I will gain weight on this diet, but calorie restriction has not worked for me all year. The scale hardly moves and when it does it's after weeks of pain and exhaustion. I am hoping this will be my solution.
The testimonials on this page convinced me to try something new.
Good luck everyone!

I'm going to do what everybody else was recommending and stop counting my calories on my UD's, at least for the next week or two. Dr. Johnson was right. I need to get rid of the whole diet mentality half the week, even if I do go over by 100 calories or so every now and then.

MARCH 27th---------DOWN DAY

Cottage cheese double-------------130 calories
1/2 block tofu----------------------- 100 calories
Medium orange------------------------60 calories
coffee with two packets sugar--------40 calories
Daquiri Ice---------------------------130 calories
3/4 cup steamed veggies-------------70 calories

TOTAL =530 calories

Thanks Angie! I didn't experience the dizziness my last DD either. I've realized I can skip breakfast, but I can't wait to eat as long as some of the other people on th is forum. Now I eat my 100 calorie meals at 11, 1, 3, 5, and 7, and that seems to work for me. I'm so happy you're okay!

Aimee! It looks like you're off to a great start! I made it through a DD today with no dizziness...but I couldn't skip breakfast like usual so I had to PLAN a lot more! Anyway, good luck with this lifestyle and keep me posted on your progress!!!

Thanks Heather. It's good to meet a fellow recovered anorexic turned JUDDDER. My battle with eating too much food and too little food has consumed all of my young life. I can only hope JUDDD works for my life as well as it has for you and so many others.

And tearing the cupboard doors open is so me! You nailed it. I'm still in that sugar binge stage of my life, but who knows? Maybe that will die down in me once I finally realize that these foods aren't off limits anymore. I was always naturally skinny until I was stupid enough to try dieting at 12 or so. Then suddenly it was starve, binge, starve, binge, starve, binge for the next 12 years. JUDDD might just teach me how to eat like a kid again: normally!

I went over by 100 calories again, but tomorrow is down day and I am super strict on those. Congrats on your plateau conquering. Keep it up!

Aimee, I was anorexic, too (about 5 years ago now) and JUDDD seems to have released me from that. I now take a whole different attitude to food. it's not the enemy anymore. I wish you success with this. And I can relate to the needing something sweet everyday. I've been a sugar junkie my whole life and actually to my surprise, JUDDD has stopped me craving sugary stuff (you know, the C-R-A-V-I-N-G you get when you start tearing the cupboard door off its hinges looking for anything with sugar in it) and it seems so much more under control. I can only assume the SIRT1 gene does something to the insulin levels to stop that.

Don't worry too much about going over on your up days. Dr Johnson doesn't even think it important to even bother keeping counti. I do (for curiosity's sake) but I certainly don't worry if I go over, even by a large amount. I've been well over my 2000 cal limit every Up day this week and yet I'm off my plateau and losing big time again. The important thing is the Down days. Good luck.

Ugh, so I finally had the courage to weigh myself this morning (after a day down day). I've been too afraid to the last few weeks but I knew I would never know my progress otherwise. I fit into the same pair of jeans I did at 150 so I assumed I was still 150. No, I'm 157! I've been muscle training alot the last three weeks, but it can't be 7 pounds of muscle, no matter how many arm reps or leg lifts I do. I had soy sauce on my veggies last night so some of it, I'm praying, could be salt. Oh well. Minu, you have a 7 pound headstart, but I'm going to catch up!

tofu with cheese---------------------------150 calories
bran cereal w/soy milk-------------------150 calories

TOTAL: 2290 calories

Thanks Heather and Minu!

Your support helps me alot! I posted my food log for the UP Day yesterday, and I went 180 calories over my limit. I guess that's easy to do at restaurants (even though my boyfriend and I split the pasta dish!) If I had only skipped that breadstick...
Oh well, I read on the forum that it's easy to go a little bit over on the first few UP days due to all the months of diet deprevation. To compensate for that I am being ultra-good on my first down day. It's nearly 11 and, as you guys recommended, I have skipped breakfast! In my teens I was anorexic (kind of a permanent down day, as my calorie limit was always less than 500) and skipping breakfast always helped me get through those days as well.

This diet really does seem easier as I keep telling myself tomorrow I can have whatever I want. This really is dieting one day at a time.

If this works, I'm telling everybody I know!

Thanks again girls!

Welcome to the group, Aimee!

I must second the skipping breaky suggestion. Ever since I've made that tweak, it's been a relatively smooth ride on the down days. And if you can manage 500 cals or less on the down days, you'll likely be doing yourself a biiiiiiiiiiiiig favor.

Enjoy your body-morphing journey--with the same goal, (as you noted), we'll be doing it in tandem.

:)

Hi Aimee, good luck with JUDDDD. If you tend to binge, remember that those goodies will still be there on your next up day, you don't have to eat every yummy food whenever there is opportunity. Maybe if you hold off starting to eat (even on up days) it reduces the time available to you to binge. Personally I found my whole attitude to food changed. I didn't crave those bad things nearly as much anymore. I even started craving salad and when I couldn't find any, made do witha steam pack of vegetables. Crazy, huh?

With time you'll find ways of handling the down days, be it delaying that first bite of the day, high protein foods, water, soup, keeping busy -whatever works. My biggest piece of advice is: skip breakfast. It makes the down days much much easier.

Good luck and don't forget to post your progress in the group.

Just started Day 1 of the Johnson's Up Day/Down Day diet. Wish me good luck. I am going to be keeping a food log everyday, even for the up days, because I have a tendency to binge. I really hope this is the solution.
